A smart ring, its app, and the brand around it

2024 · DC RING · CONSUMER HEALTH

Introduction

DC Ring is a smart ring and companion app designed for individual health tracking, while also extending Piman’s Discuss & Care platform with additional wearable data.

Piman licensed the ring hardware and needed to build the product around it, from the brand and storefront to the mobile app and its connection to the wider Discuss & Care ecosystem.

The Problem

DC Ring needed to work as a standalone health product for individual customers, while also fitting into Piman’s wider Discuss & Care ecosystem.

That meant the experience had to make health data understandable on its own, but also feel compatible with a platform already using EEG and other signals to monitor wellbeing and mental state.

The challenge was to create one product language across the ring, mobile app, brand and storefront without making the consumer experience feel like an enterprise tool.

The Design

Designing the app

I designed the app around the information people would check most often. The home screen brings together daily activity, sleep and key health metrics, while deeper screens provide more detail when needed.

For sleep and heart rate, I focused on making the data easier to read at a glance while still giving users access to deeper trends.

Making complex health data understandable

One of the more challenging parts was presenting the glucose-risk assessment. Instead of showing only a score, I designed the experience to explain the result, show the factors contributing to it and clearly communicate that the ring estimates risk rather than directly measuring blood sugar.

Results

I designed the core product experience across the brand, website and app, bringing the different parts into one visual and interaction language.

The product was still in development when I moved on, so this case study focuses on the design work rather than post-launch results.
